Permission to Stop Optimizing Everything

7 min read

There's a threshold where health behaviour stops paying you back and starts charging rent. You know you've crossed it when you feel worse after checking your sleep score than you did when you woke up.

Signs the wellness has become the problem

  • You feel guilty on rest days.
  • You've got a supplement shelf and no memory of why half of them are there.
  • Eating with other people has become logistically complicated.
  • Your recovery metrics are a source of anxiety rather than information.
  • You are, on paper, doing everything right, and you're tired all the time.

The short list that actually matters

For most women over 40, the vast majority of the benefit comes from an unglamorous handful of things: sleeping enough, moving daily, lifting something heavy twice a week, eating enough protein and fibre, keeping alcohol modest, and having people you can be honest with.

Everything past that is optimisation of a small remainder, fine if it's fun, actively harmful if it's another job.

Try this for a month

Pick three non-negotiables. Delete everything else, including the tracking. See how you feel. Most people report the same thing: no measurable decline, and a noticeable return of headspace.

You are allowed to stop. Nothing bad happens.

Please read: this is general wellness perspective from one woman to another, not medical or mental health advice, and not a substitute for knowing your own history. For anything urgent, or anything that worries you, please see a doctor or a licensed professional.
